I see you have mastered the basics....
Let's talk Competitive. In competitive Pokemon, all Pokemon are divided into tiers and ranked accorded to stats. This does prove that some Pokemon are better than others. But you knew that, right? After all you're looking into playing competitively now....
Tiers
There are 9 tiers in competitive play and each has rules that go along with it. There are Ubers, Overused, Borderline, Underused, Borderline 2, Rarely Used, Borderline 3, Neverused, and Not Fully Evolved. The two most commonly discussed are Ubers and Overused Pokemon. Ubers are the top dogs; they either hit the hardest, the fastest, defended the best, or all around are amazing. Now this isn't to say that an OU or a UU can't beat an Uber. No Pokemon is without flaw. Otherwise everyone would make the same teams that always win. So with that in mind, is it good to make a team of all Ubers? Theoretically, yes. But two UU's that support each other well can destroy a team of Ubers without breaking a sweat.
So now you're thinking... there's more strategy to this than I thought... You know it! This will take some trial and error, but in time you will get the hang of it. And no, if you are going competitive, you are not fighting some NPC that only knows how to hit and won't anticipate a trick play; you will now be playing against someone just like yourself... or better. Trust me, even the best can lose.
